Mishpatim

Posted on February 8, 2013

This weeks Parasha is Parashat Mishpatim. This Parasha is very straightforward and discusses the laws of Adam L’Chaveiro. But of all the many laws in the Torah, why is it so important to mention these first?

There are three different types of laws: Chukim, which are not fully understandable by people; Eduyot, which are testimonies; and Mishpatim, which are judgements and easily understandable. It is important to mention these Mishpatim between Adam L’Chaveiro first because it helps us understand the purpose of Torah. There is a physical dimension to life which involves everyday affairs, and a spiritual dimension which involves holiness with Hshem. The Torah tries to bring these two dimensions together. Obeying these laws is the first step to understanding the Torah in this way. Through obedience to the Torah, our normal everyday lives can become an expression of the Divine.

Shabbat Shalom!
